Lead with Diligence: Interested or Committed...You Choose!
Sep 01, 2024As a leader, one of your primary goals is to inspire and motivate your team. But what sets apart those who merely show interest from those who are truly committed? Understanding this distinction can transform your leadership style and make you the kind of leader people want to follow.
The Essence of Interest vs. Commitment
When you're interested in something, you engage with it when it's convenient. You might explore it, dabble in it, but there's no deep-rooted dedication. On the other hand, commitment means making no excuses. It's about finding a way to make things happen, no matter the obstacles.
Consider a leader who is interested in fostering a positive work culture. They might occasionally organize team-building activities or send out motivational emails. However, a committed leader goes beyond these sporadic efforts. They consistently invest time in understanding their team's needs, provide continuous support, and create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
I have always wanted to learn Spanish. I took Spanish in school, practiced occasionally, downloaded the popular app to help me learn. But I was inconsistent, never immersing myself in an environment. I know until I commit to a rigorous practice schedule, get feedback from those who speak spanish, and embraced every speaking opportunity I will never speak fluent Spanish. I’m only interested.
Key Differences in Leadership
- Consistency: Interested leaders are inconsistent. Committed leaders show up every day, even when it's tough.
- Mindset: Interest is often driven by curiosity. Commitment is driven by a deep-seated desire to achieve a goal.
- Effort: Interested leaders put in effort when it's easy. Committed leaders put in effort even when it's hard.
- Results: Interest might lead to some progress. Commitment leads to significant, lasting results.
Incorporating Scripture
The Bible offers profound wisdom on commitment. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." This verse reminds us that true commitment involves dedicating our actions and plans to a higher purpose, ensuring that our efforts are aligned with a greater good.
Moving from Interest to Commitment
As a leader, how can you transition from being interested to being committed?
Here are some actionable steps:
- Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve and why it's important to you and your team.
- Create a Plan: Break down your goal into manageable steps and create a timeline.
- Stay Accountable: Share your goals with someone who can support and hold you accountable.
- Embrace Challenges: Understand that obstacles are part of the journey. Stay focused and keep pushing forward.
- Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.
You Choose
Commitment is a choice. It's about deciding that your goal is non-negotiable and taking consistent action towards it. It's not always easy, but the rewards are worth it. As a leader, your commitment can inspire and motivate your team to achieve great things. So, ask yourself, are you interested, or are you committed? It’s your Choice.
Being the kind of leader people want to follow requires more than just interest. It demands unwavering commitment. As a diligent leader, you can create a lasting impact on your team and achieve remarkable success together. Remember, commitment is the key to unlocking your full potential.
