About

J Calaway

I am the Pastor of The Gate, a multi-cultural, mulit-genrational, multi-site church in south chicagoland/Northwest Indiana region.  I am also the CEO of InnerMission, a nonprofit company that focuses on Making Vision become Reality.

This is my personal blog. It is focused on “leading with diligence”.  It is based on Romans 12:8 (in the Bible), “If he Leads, Lead with Diligence”.  I call it R128 Leadership.  If you are going to be an effective leader, you must be diligent about it.

I write on leadership in all areas, Family, Community, Church, and Organization, I sometimes write on things that I am learning from time to time that doesn’t fit into any category.

My goal is to provide practical, relevant information that you can use in your personal and professional life. If you are a leader—or want to be—then this blog is for you.

I typically post three to five times a week. To make sure you don’t miss my newest posts, you can subscribe via RSS or e-mail.

J’s Bio

Personal/Professional life

My name is James Calaway.  (I go by J.) I am 48 years of age and have been married for 30 years.  I married my high school sweet heart right out of school.  I was eighteen and she was nineteen.  Her name is Vicki (Goss) Calaway.  I have 3 Children, Nathan (29) who is married to Carly (29) and given us three grandchildren (Haley May, Lincoln, and Ruby Jay), Brittany (26) and, Victoria, we call her Tori (22) who is married to Michael Hernandez (22) and given us twin granddaughters (MiKayla and MiCali).

I enjoy playing golf and tennis, running and bike ridding.  My hobbies include politics and buckskinning, which is a form of reenacting.  I am part of a group that reenacts the times of 1740’s-1820’s.  This is the era in which much of our country was explored and settled.  We live in Munster Indiana, which is right outside of Chicago Illinois.  I am the pastor of The Gate in Hammond Indiana.  We have been here for over 25 years.  It is a multi-site church with several locations.  Our church is in a very urban/inner-city area so we do a lot of social service style of programming.  Over the past 23 years we have planted churches in the area, started a non-profit company, started businesses to help people with jobs and additional sources of revenue, partnered with a development company to provide affordable housing.  I am a Rotarian and serve on the board of directors for the Hammond Area YMCA.

I was born in Oskaloosa Iowa on October 26th 1965 to Albert and Bev Calaway.  My father is a minister.  We moved quite often during my youth.  When we moved to Springfield, Missouri I was sixteen years of age in 1982.  That is where and when I met Vicki Goss and we have been together ever since.  I graduated from Kickapoo High School in 1984 and started my undergraduate studies in 1985.  I graduated from Central Bible College in 1988 with and B.A. in Bible.  We moved to Hammond Indiana in 1989.  In 1992 I started my graduate work at Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.  I graduated in 1999 with my Masters in Biblical Literature. I am currently working on a Doctorate of Management in Organizational Leadership.
